Kellcrest Farm
2007
In the Ayrshire world, the Kellcrest prefix is surely one of the most famous. The prefix is also synonymous with conformation, production, longevity and especially exceptional cow families.
The foundation of the Kellcrest herd goes back to the 30's when Whiteford and Jennie McKell started their breeding. Allan McKell took over from his parents in 1973. With his brother Danny associating with him in 1981, they then formed a company and built a new barn. Kevin, Allan's son, join the business in 2003. Chad, Allan's other son, works at the farm occasionally beside his job with Ayrshire Canada. The McKell family manages the herd with a lot of passion and their results are commendable.
The Kellcrest herd is one of the very rare one to be awarded the title of Master Breeder for the third time. In fact, the herd won this honor in 1986 and in 1998.
The herd consists of 175 head with 70 cows in milk. The classification of the herd shows 17 Excellent, 29 Very Good and 32 Good Plus. The production average is at 8500kg with very good components, 4.2% for fat and 3.5% protein.
For the McKell's, balance between conformation and production is fundamental. It is very easy to see in the results of their cows; they win as many prizes for production as they do in the ring. We could read the list of famous cows from the Kellcrest breeding for many long minutes, but there is one in particular, Kellcrest Happy Spirit ET EX-7E- 93 9*. This extraordinary cow is one of most renowned Ayrshire cow throughout the world, her progeny is present in many countries and her daughters have accomplished remarkable achievements, in both production and conformation. Among her progeny, there is 1 Excellent, and 8 Very Good, her most famous daughters being Kellcrest Happy ET and Lachute Road HS Salem ET.
Both sons, Kellcrest Ice Man and Kellcrest Harmony have left their mark as proven bulls and specialists in conformation.
Happy Spirit is still very solid since in February she was classified 93 points at 14 yrs and 5 mo. of age.
Kellcrest Happy is the dam of Kellcrest Happiness ET, another specialist in conformation. His daughters, Kellcrest Porsche, Kellcrest Shakira and Kellcrest Swan are all impressive cows who have bulls in artificial insemination. Porsche's daughter, Kellcrest Lea is also a superb young cow and also a bull dam.
Lachute Road HS Salem is the dam of Duo Star Normandin, an exceptional bull with a very balanced proof for production and conformation. Normandin is one of the best bulls for LPI in Canada.
The constancy of this family is visible from generation to generation and its influence throughout the world is undeniable. Therefore, its not by chance that Happy Spirit was awarded the title of "Ayrshire Dream Cow" last February as winner of the contest organized by Ayrshire Quebec. Kellcrest Casper, Kellcrest Pepper, Kellcrest Isabelle 2 and Kellcrest Katelyn are other renowned cows at Kellcrest; they have all left their mark at shows, as well as producing great quantities of milk. It's proof of the uncommon depth of the Kellcrest herd.
The McKell family love shows and participates regularly at the International Dairy Showcase and Expo-Quebec. Marketing their animals is also very important, they often consign exceptional animals at sales and they also sell embryos all over the world. With the new generation present and well established on the farm, the future is assured at Kellcrest and the successes will surely continue. Ayrshire Canada is very happy to award the title of Master Breeder to the McKell family for their success.
Congratulations.
